About Baby Arizona

Baby Arizona is a simple, faster way for pregnant women to apply for AHCCCS.

You may also be eligible to receive health care from a doctor who participates in the Baby Arizona application process before your application is approved.

If you have recently applied for Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) medical coverage, food stamps, or cash assistance through any of the following steps below:

  1. Arizona Department of Economic Services (DES) office
  2. Hospital emergency room or community health center, etc.
  3. On-line www.healthearizona.org
  4. Printed an AHCCCS application and sent via fax or mail

and you are waiting to find out if your application was approved you may not reapply for services through the Baby Arizona application process.

If you do not have an open or pending application for AHCCCS coverage, food stamps, or cash assistance, you may be able to complete an AHCCCS application through the Baby Arizona process.

AHCCCS is part of the State of Arizona and its first care is your healthcare. AHCCCS provides health insurance to more than one-million Arizonans who need assistance getting medical services for themselves, their children, or other members of their families.

Who should apply for AHCCCS THROUGH Baby Arizona?

Pregnant women who:

  • Live in Arizona
  • Have little or no income
  • Are United States citizens or qualified non-citizens.
How do I start the application process?
  1. Call the Pregnancy and Breast Feeding Hotline at 1-800-833-4642 to be pre-screened for AHCCCS through Baby Arizona.
    • You will be given names of doctors who participate in the Baby Arizona application process for AHCCCS health insurance.
  2. Choose a doctor near you and call to make an appointment for a prenatal (pregnancy) visit. Ask the doctor's office what you should bring with you for the Baby Arizona application process FOR AHCCCS health insurance.
  3. At your first visit, the office staff will help you with your Baby Arizona application for AHCCCS health insurance.
  4. Make your next appointment for a prenatal (pregnancy) visit.

The application is sent by the doctor’s office to DES, which determines if you are eligible for AHCCCS. This process should take 20 working days from the time the complete application is received at DES. You may receive prenatal care sooner, depending on a doctor's office schedule.

If you do not qualify for AHCCCS health insurance, the doctor's office should set-up a reasonable payment plan for your prenatal services and should continue to care for you and your baby.
